I do a little dance called reverse oppression
My fantastic friend jaded16india came up with that term there, so creds to her on that.
Often times, you will see an angry white person accuse me of reverse racism, or an angry het accuse me of reverse heterosexism, or an angry cis person accuse me of reverse cissexism, the list goes on.
…
/facepalm.
I use the term “reverse *insert any oppression here*” sarcastically, as it is literally impossible for such a thing to exist.
Here’s why:
Oppression=prejudice+privilege
No privilege? Not oppression, therefore, not any -ism. Prejudice maybe, but are you sure that it isn’t just your privileged fee-fee’s making it all sad :’((((( for you? Keep your privileges in check, and I promise, reading this blog will become a million times less painful if you just keep yourself and your precious feelings out of it. Protip: Never center any discussion about oppression around you. It is not the job of the oppressed individuals to hold your hand, comfort you, and reassure you that you aren’t like the rest of those big bad meanies.
Things like racism aren’t just a one time “when I was little, a black girl was mean to me, therefore, I have experienced racism as a white person living in the USA” deal. Those types of -isms are part of a huge interlocking system of oppression that cannot be eradicated by just taking out one element and hoping that the rest just fall apart on their own. Intersectionality is the key.
